New Baby Blues (Postpartum Depression)

Given our unrealistic expectations of motherhood, you may be puzzled to find yourself feeling irritable, discouraged and confused. Postpartum depression can be frightening, especially with the responsibility for a new life in your hands. Even the best birthing experience can be difficult. Afterward, you may feel overwhelmed and feel that you have lost control, yet feel too embarrassed (or too proud) to ask for help.

What Causes New Baby Blues?

During adolescence, you experienced 'raging hormones'. That, too, was a time of vulnerability to depression. Puberty changed you from a girl to a woman. In like mannter, becoming a mother changes you in every way. New-baby blues are an exaggeration of a normal, yet profound transformation. It is important is that you not get lost in taking care of everybody else.

What Can Be Done?

There may be limits to how much emotional support your husband is able to give, if he is feeling overwhelmed, also. Husbands get new-baby blues, too, although nobody talks about their hormones. You both need a safe place to reflect upon the changes that are happening to you. Nothing will ever be the same. Talking about the transition helps you to understand what is happening; talking about your feelings helps you to deal with them.
